Abstract

aFFaC acknowledges the existence of barriers to family participation in educational centers, particularly for migrant, racialized families and those from non-hegemonic cultural backgrounds. In Catalonia, where 17.24% of its population is of foreign origin (IDESCAT, 2023), significant challenges to inclusion persist. This article, based on the Participació a l’Origen research project, examines the structural, sociocultural, and institutional barriers affecting Moroccan, Romanian, Pakistani, and Senegalese families. Drawing on a qualitative and non-extractive methodology, 26 interviews were conducted. The barriers include language, unmet basic needs, discrimination rooted in aporophobia, racism and Islamophobia, limited recognition of cultural differences, limited knowledge of the educational system, difficulties in work–life balance, and lack of support networks. Given the convergence of these factors, some mothers are forced to relinquish their role as direct liaisons with the school. The article recommends the development of an anti-racist family welcome Plan, institutionally led.
