Abstract

God could have spoken to Moses on Mount Sinai, but if he had not recorded his commandments on the tablets of the Law they would not have been known by the people of Israel. Something similar happens with science if that fire of the gods is not transferred to society so that it can benefit from scientific progress. An academic elite separated from social concerns could well be compared to the Egyptian pyramids that keep great treasures for a life in the afterlife but are opaque in responding to current problems. Faced with this model of universities that resembles medieval monasteries, we analyse the characteristics of an open, interactive and collaborative university with other knowledge agents.
